About The Opening Scene:

As we see the narrative given to us is that this film will be about, up in space as they are floating and have a gear on. Also it shows us on their uniform that is says NASA and these are the people who are responsible for aerospace research and aeronautics. I find that the rest of the movie will be about a big problem happening up in space that they will have to discover and fix.

The target audience for this film I think would be sci fi fanatics or older people, because young kids wouldn't understand this film, as even, for myself is too complicated. The key convention that has been used to show the genre is that it is in space, the astronaut uniform, the spaceships shown and only strong men including one woman who seems to be the main star of the movie as she is the one who is detached at the end of the scene. We know the whole movie was made in a green screen because it wouldn't be possible to actually go up in space and film a movie as retakes have to made several times. Also it is dangerous obviously.

There are a few characters introduced, however, mainly two are shown. Straight away at the start of the scene Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are shown checking on something in the spaceship. We can see that these two characters are very brave and know what they are doing. I can tell this by when the man on the radio tells them to 'abort mission', they don't even flinch or get frightened, they only care about finding the problem.

The camera work that has been used is that the movement is acting like its them floating around. The camera is circling them whilst the problem is happening and once the scene is escalating, the camera moves faster. The sound in this scene is both diegetic (using dialogue and the ambient sounds) and non diegetic (using additional soundtrack and a voice over). The voice over was most probably put in after the scene was filmed as it's a radio they are listening to of someone who is on earth.

I find this a successful scene, however, it is also not. This is because the scene does create tension and build up a brief image of what it's about which will make a watcher want to continue watching the film. Nevertheless, I also did not find it successful because in general I just don't enjoy these type of films, therefore, not all ages will enjoy this film.
