Analysis Of A Title Sequence

Analysis Of A Title Sequence

In this post I will be writing about the difference between two totally different opening title sequences.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY

GENRE: Horror

The audience can tell the genre by the dark room and man who is shown briefly. Also shows body parts in jars which shows its odd and has some history behind the story line.

TONE:

- Location --> Old house (haunted)
- Time Period --> Old times seen from photos and the clothing worn (props).
- Tone --> Unnerving/scary on edge --> contrapuntal non-diegetic soundtrack along with calming sound effects --> unpredicted soundtrack.
- Fast pace cuts rhythm & not.

KEY TITLES:

- Includes mostly the actors from the series.
- It only shows the creators of the series.

HINTS/SUGGESTIONS:

- Non-diegetic sound --> Scary soundtrack.
- Diegetic sound --> Drilling sound.
- Fire --> On the people's pictures (suggesting death).
- Low angle movement.

CHARACTERS:

- Not many characters introduced.
- Children on photographs.
- A man briefly seen for a second which suggests is the person causing the deaths/etc.

GREASE

GENRE: Comedy, romance

The audience can tell this is the genre as it's made as a fun comic which keeps it playful and light.

TONE:

- Tone --> Teenagers (both stereotypes).
- Time Period --> Establishes 1950s USA.
- Costume/hair/cars the style/soundtrack.
- Setting/Location --> mise-en-scene.

KEY TITLES:

- Shows main actors with their real name and film name
- After showing main characters it moves on to the other information (producer, editor, etc.)

HINTS/SUGGESTIONS:

- Young people rebelling (police car).
- Innocent Disney girl vs the biker guy.

CHARACTERS:

- Main characters are displayed on how they will look.
- It is a comic so they aren't the real people.
- Gives an idea on how they are, however, without giving too much away.
