Roles On Set
In this post I will be writing about the different roles, however, how they work when on set.
Producer
- A producer sets the situation for the production of a television show or movie. It is the producer who really authors a film.
- The producer raises the money that pays for the film to be made, and is responsible for anything affecting the budget of the film.
- A film producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls all aspects of production, from fundraising and hiring key personnel, to arranging for distributors.
- The producer sees the project through to the end, from development to the complete project.
- The producer has overall control of the project and can cease the director. However, the director actually makes the film.
Famous Producer - Francis Ford Coppola
He has won 5 Oscars and some of his famous movies are; The Godfather 1/2/3, The Great Gatsby, Jack, Apocalypse Now, etc.
Director
- A director is the person who directs the making of film. They control the film's dramatic and and artistic aspects and checks the script/screenplay.
- They also guide the technical crew and actors for the vision of the script/screenplay. As well as this, they have to create different visions and always stay within the boundaries of the budget.
- The director is mainly the key person to choose the cast for the film.
- Every director has a different approach for a film. Some directors edit or even appear in their own films (e.g. Sylvester Stallone)
Famous Director - Quentin Tarantino
He has won 2 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes. Some of his famous films are Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Kill Bill 1/2/3, etc.
Director of Photography
- A DOP or cinematographer is the main chief over the camera and light crews working on the film.
- They select the camera, film stock, lenses, etc. However, they always have to take into account the intentions of what the director wants included and what emotions he wants the audience to be impacted by.
- The director will normally convey to the DOP/cinematographer what is wanted for a scene visually, and allow the cinematographer latitude in achieving the directors wanted effects.
He has won 1 Oscar and 4 BAFTA awards. Some of the famous movies are; Blade Runner 2049, Skyfall, Hail Caesar, Rango, etc.
- A camera operator is a professional operator of a film or video camera.
- They are responsible for physically operating the camera and keeping the composition and camera angles throughout a scene or shot.
- The camera operator will collaborate with the director, director of photography, actors and crew to make creative and technical decisions. the camera is often called on to film unfolding and unscripted events.
He hasn't won any awards, however, some of his famous films are; Alvin and the Chipmunks 1/2/3, Deuce Bigalow, Barely Lethal, etc.
Set Designer and Continuity Supervisor
He has won 2 Oscars and 1 BAFTA award. Some of his famous films are; Avatar, Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Lincoln, etc.
Editor
- Editing is the technical part of the post-production process of filmmaking.
- The editor works with the raw footage, selecting the best shots and combining them into sequences which creates the final motion picture. Editing is described as an art or skill.
- This job is not simply to mechanically put the pieces of film together or edit dialogue scenes however to also have a creative view and give ideas as well.
He has won 2 Oscars and 2 BAFTA awards. Some of his famous edited films are; Gladiator, The Martian, Kick Ass, The Amazing Spider Man 1/2, etc.
