Different Areas Of Filmmaking
In this post I will be writing about the different areas in filmmaking and about the different roles, stages and contributions involved.
Production
Definition: The production process refers to the different stages required to complete a media product, from the idea to the final stage. This process can apply to any types of media production including; film, video, television and audio recording. (refers to the making of the film).

1. Pre-Production - Planning, scripting & storyboarding, etc.
2. Production - The actual shooting & recording.
3. Post-Production - Everything between production and creating the final master copy.
Roles Involved: Finding the idea, writing the script, pitching it to a studio, setting a budget, casting stars and employing a crew, filming and editing.
What Does Each Area Contribute To:
- Financing - This happens before pre-production, and involves budget forecasting, finding investors, etc.
- Screenplay - This can be considered a separate stage before pre-production.
- Distribution - After post-production, delivering the content to the audience (e.g. film prints, CD/DVD, etc.)
Distribution
Definition: Distribution involves acquiring a film from the producers and trying to make it reach the widest audiences possible by selling it to exhibitors (cinema).

Marketing
Definition: Media marketing centres on promoting brands and selling products and services through established and emerging online channels. Marketing in general draw in clients and construct a brand image. There are two types of media now, which are;
- Traditional Marketing - This includes business cards, notices, announcements, TV and radio, daily newspapers and magazines.
- Digital Marketing - This includes websites, social media, and youtube videos.

Exhibition
Definition: It is a collection of things (goods or works of art etc.) for public display. The cinema release of a film marks the final stage of one part of a film's journey from idea to the audiences. After the cinema release, the film will then be available on different formats (e.g. blu-ray/DVD etc.)
Different Stages: Cinema, DVD/blu-ray/downloads, subscription television, free to air television, etc. Different types of cinema - multiplex, IMAX, art-house.
