Camera Workshop 1

Workshop 1

In this post I will be writing about what we have learnt on the camera workshop including the camera and tripod.

The Equipment I Was Shown Was:

- Tripod
- Black magic camera 4k USRA
- FX7
- FS100

The main camera we will be using is the black magic camera (nikon).

What Do You Need To Use The “Yours” & “Mine” Rule?

There is a rule called "yours" & "mine" which means, when someone is holding the camera and has to hand it to their peer, the person holding it will say "yours" and once their peer has said "mine" it means they are able to hold the camera alone without dropping it. As it is heavy and its an expensive piece of equipment.

What Is The Spirit Level For?

The spirit level is when adjusting the camera you can check the spirit level for any air bubbles so that the camera will stay straight up instead of tilted without realising it.

How To Use The Tripod:

- Firstly you've got to open up the tripod so its standing up straight.
- Most tripods have a lock on it, so if you're wondering why it wont open, it would be best to check for locks.
- Once opened, make the bottom flat on the ground so its up on the same level as your waistline.
- You can adjust it from the sides.
- After doing this, you've got to stick the pan handle on the right hand of the tripod in the circle.
- There is also a pan lock which is next to the spirit level and a tilt lock which you will see on the the left side of the tripod.
- Another important past is the friction hold which fixes the resistance on the camera and it's on the right hand side.

How To Add On The Camera?

- Firstly, you have to make sure a metal bit is tucked away on the top of the tripod.

- When that's done you slide camera on top of the tripod head whilst pressing the button on the left hand side of the tripod.
- Once the camera is in place don't lose grip of the camera yet until you tilt the lock on the right hand side to keep the camera firmly on the tripod.

How Do You Focus And Zoom?

- These two operations can be found on the front of the camera on the lens.
- To focus you circulate the thinner part that moves on the lens which will adjust how clearly you can see the surrounding.
- To zoom you circulate the wider part that moves on the lens which will adjust how close you want a surrounding to be.

Why Do We Need To Zoom In To Focus And Then Zoom Out?

- We need to zoom in first to check that it is fully focused when zoomed in because then that means that it will be completely focus when zoomed out.
- This is helpful because if you focus when the camera is zoomed out it might look sharp there but when you need to zoom in it will be completely blurred.

What Is White Balancing And Why Do You Have To Change It? How Do You Change It?

- White balancing is an adjustment on the camera which you have to change when you go to a different location or lighting. White balance is to maintain the neutral tones of the surrounding.
- We have to change it because depending on where we film the sequence or music video it will have to go with the location we are in, because if we are inside with manual lighting and the camera is on the outside mode, it wont look so good, therefore, that is why we have to change it.
- We change it by looking on the touch screen of the camera and pressing on the right hand side where it says WB (white balance) and there you will see the different option/locations to choose from depending where you are filming.

What Should You Always Film In Colour And With No Effects?

- You should always film with no effects or colour whilst filming because then later on if you change your mind you won't be able to change it. Where as if you just filmed without effects/colours, later on you will be able to edit on anything you like and change it around in post-production.
