Phil Tidy Talk

Phil Tidy Talk

In this post I will be writing about Phil Tidy who came and spoke to us briefly about the music video industry.

We had a music producer come in for a talk called Phil Tidy. Over the years he has created several famous music videos with artists like; Spice Girls, Coldplay, Shakira, etc. Tidy has produced over 100s of music videos and tv commercials, which made him known within the music industry. Phil Tidy also is the co-founder and producer of BUG which has been going on for 10 years and began at the same time as Youtube. It shows over 800 music videos on the big screen at BFI, which is a conference for all teachers of film and media, to meet and inspire themselves. BUG has an amazing depth of creativity within their videos which makes them unique to other platforms.

His first video was of Lauren Laverne called "No Falter", where he experimented different ways to achieve digital videos when Premier Pro and Photoshop didn't exist, which is interesting because it shows that nowadays we can create an amazing video from all of the great technology we have. Within this video, he was also partly the cameraman. This music video was shot in a local supermarket, and all costs were low budget which gives us an idea on how you can still achieve a great music video and having all of the resources needed without having to pay large amounts of money that most artist do nowadays.

Below Tidy showed us the processes of making a music video:

1. Firstly you have the brief which is explaining what the genre is of the song and a full treatment essay on why the record label want to create this video. It also shows the budget so that the person looking at this information can see how much is being spent and if it is worth creating. This means that the record label have to carefully plan this so that the person reading it will immediately want to fund the music video.

2. Secondly you need a budget page where it lists down all expenses that have to be paid for the music video to be made. It all then sums up to the final cost.

3. Lastly, are the contracts which revolves around all the legal papers for permission to shoot in certain places and to make sure that anyone in the video is okay with being included.

Overall, this talk clarified that it is possible to create a creative and skilled music video with a low budget only by being smart and organised with how you plan it out.

Below are some other music videos he has created:

Photoshop Handsome by Everything, Everything

Runaway by Jamiroquai
