Lip Sync Workshop
Lip Sync Workshop
In this post I will be writing about what we did in our lesson when we learnt how to film a music video using lip sync.
Me and my class had a lesson on how to film lip sync videos so I am prepared for the actual music video next year. In the studio we were put into 3 seperate groups and briefly planned what parts we were all taking first, and from there we would alternate roles for each background there was so that everyone had a chance to learn. Every group had one floor manager who would make sure everything is ready before filming, then we also had one person operating the digital clapperboard we used for timing purposes to make sure the video was in sync with the song. For example; I began in front of the camera, then went on to using the camera, after that I helped with putting the markers down which meant I had to keep track on where the people were standing in the frame to get the position right for the next camera angle. As well as this, one other the sets had a dolly which was most or our first times learning about it. A dolly is a type of cart which travels along tracks and there is a camera mounted on it. When I used the dolly I then realised that getting the cart to move smoothly was harder than expected, however, I am happy that we all got to try it out and know roughly how it works so that any of us can use it for our music video. The only important rule when sitting on the dolly is to be careful and not lean back.
Whilst we filmed we made sure to get many different shots like master shots and closeup shots, this was clever because then we avoided getting the same kinds of shots every time. Which would help usn later when we are editing it. Another important thing we all did was sing the song out loud as if we were actually singing, this creates a more realistic effect towards viewers.
For this exercise we had a tight schedule to get it finished in time. This meant that it was very important to get everything right on. Nevertheless, it clearly didn't matter very much for this exercise as we were only supposed to have a realisation on how shooting the actual music will be.
When we moved to the editing suite to start editing. We began by arranging all of the best shots we had taken and moving them down to the timeline first before syncing the music together. The process for syncing the video to the song is by firstly taking a look at the digital clapperboard on the video. Whilst finishing that you would then check the soundtrack and try your best to get the same beat on both the song and video. This makes the music video more realistic and efficient.
There is a general rule that I learnt called to edit rhythmically. This is when you listen to the soundtrack whilst watching our footage and after you begin to try cut the videos at the suitable times. This gives the music video a more watchable quality for the viewers as they won't get bored without noticing it.

From this lesson I learnt how to correctly sync up the soundtrack to the video in an effective manner. Also, this helped me to properly be prepared to come into the studio and editing suit knowing exactly what to do and how to do it.
