Shoot Day Evaluation

Shoot Day Evaluation

In this post I will be writing about the full day of when we shot our title sequence in detail. Also by showing some photos from behind the scenes.

Our shoot day was on the 7th of March, 2019. We started the morning off by gathering our cast we had arranged and got them into their costumes. After this we headed up to the edit suite where our first location was, carrying all of the props we were going to use. When we got to the edit suite, we had a meeting and decided that our idea wasn't good enough, therefore, we thought of different alternatives on making in better. Finally we decided on instead of filming the forest scene we would use a set design that was already set up in the studio which we could use for the space where the three girls would fight each other. When we clarified on what we were going to do we decided on a plan for the day and what would suit best to film first. The camera we used was the nikon black magic and we only used one lens throughout the shoot day. We also had to set up these coloured lights to give the scenery of how a club looks like. we placed these lights close to the actors so that when we filmed it wouldn't be too dark and to still be able to see the features and reactions on the actor's faces.

After the meeting within my group we decided on filming in the edit suite first as we only needed two of our actors in it which were the owner of the bet and the man betting (Mike & Ali). This first scene in the edit suite revolved around the owner showing his domination of this betting game and the man betting who is going to meet up with the owner and place a large bet on one of the girls. These two people are supposed to look superior to the others as they are in a different location where there is no commotion. Tom was the camera man who was in charge on getting the angles and filming right, Gabby was the director who was in charge of making sure everyone did what they had to in the scene and called when the camera man will start filming, Alice was the producer who was in charge of making sure everything was in place and also helped Gabby out with anything she needed, and lastly me I was in charge of taking most of the videos and photos of the behind the scenes and also giving any advice that came up in my head to make the sequence as good as it could be. My role on set is the editor therefore, most of the work I put in will be later on when I edit the sequence to the best of my ability.

The first scene took longer than we had thought which was good because then we covered a lot of footage which will then be a positive part for me as there will be more to choose from when it comes to editing the sequence and making it the best it can be. Eventually we finished the first scene and went down to the studio where the bigger scene would take place with the three girls and them fighting each other. For the sequence to look realistic and not unprofessional meant that we had to make a fighting choreography for the actresses so that it would be clear to them what they had to do without it looking poor. We got some feedback from an actual fighter that knew some moves to show the girls that would be easy enough to pull off. When we established this we added some makeup on the girls, however, not normal makeup but more of the fake bruises and sweat. I was in charge of the props and I had bought a bottle of blood, although, one of the girls had to have it come out of her mouth therefore, we had to find fake blood that could also be eaten so no harm could occur to the actors.

As I wrote earlier, we had slightly changed the idea, this meant that we thought of making the location as a club. This also meant that we needed a large amount of background actors to be watching the girls and betting on them with the fake money I bought. We gathered as  many students as we could find and use to be in the background whilst the girls fought each other. As there were going to be a large amount of crowd us as a team had to keep a close look on them and make sure they didn't do anything inappropriate or unprofessional to make the sequence not look at its best. The people did start overreacting with flashing the money around everywhere, therefore, I took action and told them to tone it down and not do it as much which helped us. In the end, the scene turned out better than expected and we shot as much footage as we needed thus meant it was a successful shoot day.

Within this shoot day I learnt a lot on how to manage a scene and how to lay actors out in the right way, with the right directions of the sequence. I found it was both good and bad. It was good because our cast was cooperative and we helped each other out a lot which made the day easier, nevertheless, it was bad because we had changed the idea slightly which made it more complicated as we couldn't even reflect on to our storyboard, therefore, it had to be more of in the moment decisions on what to do next in the scenes being shot.

I feel like next time I could make sure that I am fully prepared for the shoot day and also give in more demands as I am normally a quiet person which doesn't work in this particular are which I have learnt. Most of the technical skills we did during the shoot I had already known from all of the workshops that we have learnt the only new technical skill I learnt was that on the screen of the camera there is a button to activate an extra surrounded screen to make the sequence look more film like some examples below:

My favourite part of the day was when we filmed down in the studio of the girls fighting because there was action and more ways to filming it. Another reason towards this, is that it was full of surprises and new ideas would come through which will make our sequence adjustable and different to others. When it comes to editing the sequence I'm most excited about going through all of the footage we filmed and by also researching on how to make it have as much tension as possible because it's up to me whether the sequence turns out the way we wanted it to. Some challenges I find I will face whilst I edit are, making sure that the audio is in sync and that the sound effects fit into the idea of the opening sequence. As I wrote earlier I am very happy with the footage we shot because we made sure we caught all of the different angles and positions, therefore, when it comes to editing, anything can be added that we think suits the scene.

For the next filming project I have learnt that being very prepared is key because then it will be easier on the group on shoot day as you would have a lot of information that explains the whole idea and what will happen in the sequence. As well as this I will also make sure we are organised in the way of preparing choreography if needed and also dialogue if used. Finally, if I redo the shoot day what I would do differently is that I would get the cast to try on costumes on a different day so if it doesn't go well as we thought we have at least enough time to come up with a solution. Other than that I feel like our shoot day was successful and fun to experience for the first time.
