Why The Costumes We Have Chosen Are Needed

In this post Gabby and Alice will write about why we chose these costumes for the opening sequence.

Gabby and Alice were in charge of the costumes, here is their information on why we need it:

Why We Chose The Costumes:

THE GIRLS

We thought about lots of ideas for the girls costumes, should they wear casual clothes?, etc. We came to the conclusion that they would look most effective wearing long white night dresses. Night dresses exaggerate the fact that they are young girls. The fact that they will be wearing roughly the same costumes shows that they have been forced or made to wear the dress by the protagonists. Because the dresses are not necessarily fashionable shows they don't want to be wearing the dress and that they are being controlled in a way. White is also a connotation of purity so it contrasts well with the dark setting and the fact they have mud and Un pure setting around them, so this immediately will show that they are good not evil. The dresses will also be easy to make look damaged and will be easy to rip and crumple. Colours such as mud or blood will stand out creating a distressed mood.

THE GAME MASTER

We want the game master to look sleek but evil. We had the idea of putting him in a suit with a red tie because red and black have the connotations of evil, but then we thought it is very traditional and not original enough for a futuristic movie. So we thought we should put him in a dark grey or black suit and a black polo neck to make him look more stylish but also keeping the sense of evil and superiority  He will contrast with the girls and the chooser because of the way he will be well put together and clean contrasting with the girls rough nightdress and the choosers casual clothes. This will all give him an immediate higher status in the sequence.

THE CHOOSER

The chooser will be wearing casual clothes, we were just thinking dark denim trousers, a brown top or hoodie and trainers. We chose casual clothes because we want it to be obvious what his status is as he is not as superior as the game master but he has not been captured. It also shows he was not prepared because if he was maybe he would not be wearing every day clothes. Being in casual clothes also makes him look like he is not part of this whole new world and game and he is just normal, therefore the audience will relate to his situation.
