Henry Jenkins "Spreadability"

Henry Jenkins "Spreadability"

In this post I will briefly be writing about the theorist Henry Jenkins and the topic of spreadable media.

Henry Jenkins was born the 4th of June, 1958 in Atlanta, USA. He is a professor of communication, journalism and cinematic arts at the University of Southern California and has been since 1992. He has also authored and co-authored a dozen books usually about media academics. One of his books called 'Spreadable Media' is what I will be researching more in depth.

Henry Jenkins suggests that it is all up to the consumers on spreading media products to others, with the use of social media platforms, the internet and even speaking between each other. In this decade, most people will send, tag or post the information in order for other people to find the product and do the same. This expands in a short amount of time. This form of sharing between us is part of the new online media. However, not everyone is participating. Some have no choice because of the limited access to it, or there are people who just choose not to be involved because they aren't interested, etc.

Henry mentions that something that becomes "viral" is a dead end. This often includes content that some might not want to share but others choose to pass it along. The consumers are the people who decide on how they spread it, in various conversations or messages, they could also change the message to someone else perhaps in order to switch around the real story. This could result in a virus, which is contagious for the media text.

Saying that, any person can decide if they want to share something or not, even though it might be wrong, the person will still share it and once this action is made there will be no turning back. There is no going back, because everything that has been posted on the web, stays on there and can be always be used against you in the future. This demonstrates how powerful the internet is.

Henry Jenkins also has a whole book on spreadable media that goes into more depth which also shows his interest with this topic and how important it actually is to the world.

Within my music video, I will use his theory for when I am creating the digipak and website for our artist. This is because, it is the easiest way to advertise the upcoming artist in a way where it will attract our primary audience (girls - 18-20), so they will then share it between each other, which will then potentially make it known worldwide. This will easily work, because I will be creating accounts for the artist on all of the famous social media platforms which will get the word out in an efficient way.
