Goodwin's Narrative Theory Of Music Videos
Goodwin's Narrative Theory
In this post I will be writing about what Goodwin's theory is within music videos.
In these shots of the music video it shows that it's a narrative story because of the use of loneliness that we can tell from the artists expressions, and also as there is not one single person surrounding her by showing her comfort. As well as this, the black and white grainy effect that's used is there to imply how in her eyes everything is dark and sorrowful.
2. AMPLIFICATION
These shots show that this music video is amplification because the song is about animals yet in the video it implies that he is the animal hunting down a girl that he is obsessed with, which gives it that deeper meaning. It links back to the lyrics by demonstrating that he is an animal like you can see in the shot below.
For this music video it instantly shows that it is a disjuncture because so many different things are happening at the same time that have nothing to do with the song. The only connection the music video has is how it's set in a creepy underworld that is definitely freaky, however, not what we would expect for this type of song and genre.
There are 3 different narrative structures that Goodwin uses within his theory which are:
1. ILLUSTRATION
This is where the music video tells the story from the lyrics. Dancing is often used to express feelings or moods in the song.
An example of this structure:
Artist - Adele
Song - Someone Like You
Release - 2011
In these shots of the music video it shows that it's a narrative story because of the use of loneliness that we can tell from the artists expressions, and also as there is not one single person surrounding her by showing her comfort. As well as this, the black and white grainy effect that's used is there to imply how in her eyes everything is dark and sorrowful.
This is where images amplify the lyrics as a narrative may be used to convey a deeper meaning that would not be picked up from the lyrics alone. The artists may usually take up fictional roles within the narrative.
An example for this structure:
Artist - Maroon 5
Song - Animals
Release - 2014
These shots show that this music video is amplification because the song is about animals yet in the video it implies that he is the animal hunting down a girl that he is obsessed with, which gives it that deeper meaning. It links back to the lyrics by demonstrating that he is an animal like you can see in the shot below.
3. DISJUNCTURE
This is where there is a very small connection between the lyrics and video or it could be that the video contradicts the lyrics.
An example for this structure:
Artist - Missy Elliot
Song - Get Ur Freak On
Release - 2009
For this music video it instantly shows that it is a disjuncture because so many different things are happening at the same time that have nothing to do with the song. The only connection the music video has is how it's set in a creepy underworld that is definitely freaky, however, not what we would expect for this type of song and genre.
